What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy, also known as art psychotherapy, is a form of psychotherapy that uses art-making and the creative process alongside talking and reflection.

Art therapy is for everyone. You do not need to be an artist or have any previous experience of making art. It is not about producing a finished piece of artwork, being “good at art”, or having your artwork interpreted for you.

Sometimes experiences can be difficult to express through words alone. Working with images, materials, colour, texture or form can offer another way of exploring thoughts, feelings and experiences. At other times, you may prefer to talk rather than make anything at all.

In my practice, you decide how you engage with the creative process. I work alongside you, remaining curious about what emerges and giving you space to find your own meanings and connections.

About Amelia

Art psychotherapy, creative practice and compassionate experience.

I am a qualified Art Psychotherapist, practising multidisciplinary artist and educator.

My clinical experience includes working within the NHS, supporting older adults through the Memory Team and Community Mental Health Services. I have also provided therapeutic support within the charity sector for homelessness prevention, working with young adults in hostel settings and with families through family services. Across these settings, I have supported people experiencing memory loss, identity crisis, dementia, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, neurodiversity overwhelm, childhood trauma, grief and loss, displacement, relationship difficulties, and mother-and-child attachment concerns, among others.

I bring more than twenty years of experience in education, working extensively with parents, families, children and young people. Through compassionate leadership and teaching, my holistic interest in social, emotional and cultural wellbeing ultimately led me to train as an Art Psychotherapist.

Alongside my therapeutic work, I maintain my own multidisciplinary art practice. My relationship with materials and the creative process informs the way I work therapeutically, offering possibilities for expression, exploration and discovering meaning beyond words alone.

My approach

I work alongside you.

My approach to art psychotherapy is person-centred. Rather than directing the session, I work alongside you, allowing each session to be led by what you bring and what feels important to explore. I provide a confidential space with a wide range of art materials available to support creative self-expression — but there is no expectation that you need to make art. Your autonomy is central, and choosing not to make is equally respected.

Curiosity

We begin with curiosity about what has brought you to therapy and what may be emerging, without assuming we already know the answers.

Create

Materials and image-making can offer another language for experiences that may be difficult to put into words. There is no prescribed outcome and no judgement of what you make.

Connect

Towards the end of the session, we can reflect together on the making, conversation, feelings and experiences that may have emerged, and what the process might mean for you.

Adults, Young People and Children

Change, identity and uncertainty

Support for anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, financial pressures, relationships, feeling stuck and transitions such as leaving education, starting or changing work, moving home or adjusting to greater independence.

Adults and Young People: I offer a confidential space at The Practice Rooms, London or Worldwide Online

Children: I offer 1:1 or small group therapy through referrals from school or other communities where therapy would be provided onsite.

Neurodiversity

Professional and lived understanding

I bring both professional and lived experience of neurodiversity to my practice, including my own experience of navigating a late diagnosis of ADHD. Therapy can offer space to explore identity, masking, relationships and your own ways of thinking, feeling and being.

Parents

Parents of neurodivergent children

In the midst of supporting your child, it can be difficult to find space for your own experience. I offer a confidential place to explore the emotional load of advocacy, feeling unheard, exhaustion, isolation, family relationships and your own needs.

Professionals

A space where you do not need to perform

For burnout, workplace relationships, confidence, returning after illness or maternity/paternity leave, taking on promotion or new responsibilities, and questioning what you want from your working life.

Perhaps you're here because…

Something needs space and attention.

You may be feeling overwhelmed, anxious or stuck, navigating a period of change, loss or uncertainty, or finding that the ways you have managed things in the past no longer feel enough.

You might be exploring identity or neurodivergence, adjusting to a late diagnosis, experiencing the exhaustion of masking, managing professional responsibilities, challenging relationships or the emotional demands of parenting a neurodivergent child.

Or you may not have a clear explanation at all. You do not need to arrive at therapy knowing exactly what you want to say or make. We can begin with curiosity about what has brought you here and work alongside one another from there.

Making can take many forms

There is no right way to create.

Art therapy can involve colour, texture, image, object, materials — or no making at all. The process is led by you.

Education

Reflective Practice, Organisational Training and Creative Workshops

Reflective Practice

Reflective practice offers a supportive space for individuals and teams to pause, think together and explore experiences arising within their professional roles.

Using creative and reflective approaches, sessions can provide an opportunity to consider relationships, emotional responses, workplace dynamics and the impact of supporting others. The emphasis is on developing awareness, encouraging curiosity and creating space for different perspectives to emerge.

Reflective practice can be particularly valuable for professionals working in caring, therapeutic, educational, health, social care and community settings, where the emotional demands of the work can sometimes be difficult to process within the working day.

Reflective Practice/Training:Sessions can be developed for individuals, groups or organisations according to their particular context and needs. These can be delivered either at your organisation or online, however for individuals and small groups I can offer a beautiful space at The Practice Rooms.

Creative Workshops are bespoke - created and delivered at your organisation.

Please book a discovery call if you would like to find out more.
